Three-year retrospective: What should you know about your broken foot?

I made this blog in 2015 when I broke my foot and was depressed about it. I worried and agonized about its progress every single day, and I stressed about every decision.

Looking through my posts, I can say I now feel differently about some things than I did at the time, and the extra three years has given me a better perspective. So, I thought it would be a good idea to do a broad post with my overall takeaways from the experience:

Blue Apron vs. Hello Fresh vs. Plated

When I broke my foot and it was hard to shop, I relied on Instacart for groceries, but I also started using meal kit services. Basically, they send you the fresh ingredients you need, pre-portioned out, so you can follow a recipe along and make a real dinner.

I’ve tried a few of these and they are super convenient — not just from a shopping standpoint, but if you’re indecisive like me, they plan your meals for you. I’ve tried four of them out to date — Hello Fresh, Plated, Blue Apron and Purple Carrot — so I thought I’d give a review of my experience.

Week 11 check-in: Almost back to normal. Almost.

Wow, I just looked at the calendar to title this blog post and notice it’s been more than 11 weeks since I broke my fifth metatarsal. That’s nearly three months and only now am I starting to feel normal.

Week 9: The X-ray is finally showing progress

I have to admit, I feel a little ambivalent about my doctor visit today. On one hand (or foot, ha ha), I felt so disappointed to still clearly see the fracture. But on the other hand, it is actually finally filling in, my first time with indisputable progress on an X-ray, so I suppose I need to take the victories where I can get them!

Week 7: Here’s how my first week of walking without crutches went

It’s been a whole week and I’ve walked on two feet without crutches. Yes, my X-ray does still show, clear as day, that my fifth metatarsal is very, very broken. But my doctor told me to start walking on it in my boot, so I have.

It’s been both bad and good. All in all, it feels like the more I walk, the better my foot feels but the first few days were pretty rocky.
